Conference in English of Pr Silvia Helena Galvao de Miranda, Professor at the University of Sao Paulo - ESALQ
There is a great deal of heterogeneity in the Brazilian agricultural sector. Considering some extreme cases, we live with a section of agriculture with productive efficiency, high technology, moving fast towards digital agriculture, and which adopts measures aimed at reducing environmental impacts. This category comprises both, large and small-scale producers. But we also have commercial producers, very productive, who are not fully committed to more sustainable production systems. On the other hand, there are a large number of small-scale and low-tech producers, who are poorly organised and have difficulties accessing technical assistance and finance and consequently, they face difficulties also to access the markets and generate income. So, the challenges to accelerate transition to a more sustainable agriculture are huge in Brazil. There are agricultural and environmental policies and cross-compliance mechanisms that are leading to some progress, but we still have to improve governance and sensitiveness in the agriculture sector.
